Harvest

By the time Lieutenant Kenneth returns to the Medi-suite with Anne on the trolley; Naoko is already in theatre. Surgeon Nicole is being assisted by Nurse Nancy Echo and has already sedated Naoko in preparation for the abdominal operation.

Aware that more casualties are on the way Julie Delta and Barbara Bravo have been waiting in the main room. Seeing the Lieutenant wheeling the trolley through the door both the women rush forward.

“What do we have here?” asks Barbara

Before the Lieutenant can answer Julie cuts in; “Chest wound by the look of it”.

“Be very careful of this one” warns the Lieutenant in a low voice; “we have no idea of who she is; she’s not security, despite the uniform, and she shot one of my men”.

Barbara takes a deep breath; “with a chest wound I don’t think we can use restraints” she comments; “has she shown any signs of becoming a terror?”

“We don’t know” replies the Lieutenant; “but it’s perfectly possible. She started to shoot at Security Officer John Indigo after he’d just shot the terror”.

Whist the conversation has been going on Julie has been using a hand-held scanner on Anne. Suddenly she cuts in; “she doesn’t have an artificial heart”.

“She’s too young for a crew member, though isn’t she?” questions the Lieutenant.

“Unless she’s been refreshed” continues Barbara

“Refreshed?” questions the Lieutenant but Julie interrupts “Her scull is all bone with no sign of synthetic polymers or similar”.

“Okay; so, she wasn’t a sleeper or a crew member” summarises Barbara; “that only leave one option that I can think of…”

“Which is?” the Lieutenant asks

“Another offspring of the crew” replies Barbara in an almost matter of fact voice.

“We are going to need a scan of the bullet” interrupts Julie; “it’s obviously in the chest cavity and is a sucking wound”.

“So, if she doesn’t bleed to death then she’ll suffocate if not operated on soon” continues Barbara; “Patching the wound will slow down the process but internal bleeding will fill up the cavity. Without an artificial heart we aren’t able to slow down the blood flow without drugs.”

“Fifty mils of Paramethia?” asks Julie

“That creates an artificial bradycardia episode doesn’t it?” questions Barbara

“Yes; can slow the blood flow to a quarter; unfortunately, blood loss will end up speeding up the heartbeat so we need to do something pretty quick.”

“Okay; let’s go for it” agrees Barbara.

At this time the doors open again and in staggers Security officer John Indigo assisted by Nurse Mae. She helps him to a chair and he settles down.

Almost immediately the doors open again and in march the Admiral and Kalpana.

Seeing the Lieutenant, the Admiral demands; “Lieutenant; we must speak to you”.

The Lieutenant looks around and sees Sergeant Toktar sitting nearby. Taking his handgun out he walks over and asks “are you able to guard this prisoner Sergeant?”

“Shouldn’t be a problem sir” replies the Sergeant; “I’ve still got one good hand”.

“Good man” responds the Lieutenant handing him the gun; then turning and walking over to the Admiral he continues “right Admiral; I’m all yours”.
